Hall of Famer Rod Carew’s new heart came from ex-Ravens tight end

Carew was released from the hospital in February, and the Reulands, having found out the unlikely recipients of Konrad’s donations, invited him and his family to their home last month. When Reuland’s mother, Mary, saw Carew, she hugged him and said: “You’re part of our family now.”

“Forever,” Carew said. “I will take care of this one because I’ve been given a second chance, and God knows how I feel and what I’m going to do for him.”

Rod Carew passes 1-month mark since heart transplant

Rod Carew tells the American Heart Association News he’s “doing great” since the 13-hour heart transplant operation on Dec. 16. He’s spent the last week in a rehabilitation center and expects to return home soon. Rod Carew- a seven-time American League batting champion and first-ballot selection to the Hall of Fame.

Carew says he wants to remind people to get their hearts checked. His donor was a 29-year-old man.
