From flu symptoms to heart failure: A New York teen’s harrowing heart transplant tale

The terrifying question seemingly stopped time as nurses and doctors tried to save 15-year-old Zachary Losee, whose heart had suddenly failed after coming down with flu-like symptoms.

It turned out to be just the beginning of a four-month medical odyssey from that harrowing moment at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester to Losee’s heart-transplant recovery at Blythedale Children’s Hospital in Valhalla.

Zach also described plans to become a cardiologist and get involved in organ donor advocacy, having been inspired by Lauren Shields, a Rockland County transplant recipient turned pre-med student.

“All her stories just impacted me…just like me she had viral myocarditis and had to relearn everything,” Zach said.

Family listens to deceased son’s heart 11 years after transplant

After years of letters and Facebook messages, the two women exchanged emotional hugs, and then Boenitz offered Boylen the chance to listen to her deceased son’s heart beating inside of her chest.

“Do you want to hear his heart,” she said. “It’s probably going a million miles an hour.”

Boylen listened first, followed by Matthew’s 12-year-old daughter, his two sisters, his longtime girlfriend and his nieces and nephews, IndyStar.com reported.

“He would have wanted his heart to go to someone who loved their family, who made a difference in the world,” Jamie Harriman, Matthew’s sister, told IndyStar.com. “That’s why we’ve been able to come to terms. We’re all organ donors now.
