Donate Life NYS
The New York Gift Act (A.7800A Gottfried/ S.6000A Rivera) will align New York with nationwide standards enacted in 48 other states, address existing barriers to making an anatomical gift, uphold the autonomy of registered organ and tissue donors, and provide clarity to support the decisions of families making these vitally important and life-saving gifts.
New York is one of only two states that have not until now adopted the most recent revisions to the federal Uniform Anatomical Gift Act (“AGA”) drafted in 2006.
New York’s current law includes portions of the AGA’s 1987 revisions, which were adopted by the state in the 1990s.
Special thanks to Senator Gustavo Rivera, Assemblyman Richard Gottfried and the champions of donation and transplantation in the NYS Legislature.
Now that the New York Gift Act passed both the NYS Senate and Assembly, it will head to the Governor’s desk for approval. Donate Life NYS will send out additional updates as the New York Gift Act moves forward.
